Options/procedures

This meta programme looks at how someone approaches their work, and how well they may handle rules.

An options person is motivated by opportunities and possibilities to do something in a different way, even if it is working well. They can create a procedure, but are unlikely to follow it. They like choice and prefer development to maintenance activities. They find it difficult to commit, because it may reduce options. They will talk about making choices and expanding choice and possibilities. The influencing language you can use to motivate an options person are words like opportunity, choice, alternative, and phrases such as ‘here are the options’, ‘break the rule’ and ‘there has got to be (another) way’.

A procedures person will like to follow a process and be lost without one. They believe there is a right way of doing things, and do not want to break the rules. It is important for them to finish a procedure. They are more interested in how something happened than why. They will talk in stories and about how something happened, and not about choice.

The influencing language you can use to motivate a procedures person are phrases like ‘the right way’ and speak in procedures, such as ‘first … then … after which’ and so on.

In supervision, difficulties can arise when each person has a different meta programme. For example, a supervisor who likes looking at options could be frustrated by a supervisee who ‘just wants to be told how to do it’. Adapting your style can help the work to be completed.
